I drink a lot!

It’s Hope here, your Jamie Slone Wines wine educator!

Now you might be thinking, “Hope, how did you become a wine educator?”  Let me tell you, I drink.  A lot.  Now I am not necessarily talking about the quantity of wine I drink or even the quality of the wine.  When I say “a lot” I am talking about the diversity of the wine.

One of the most frustrating situations I encounter when talking to people about wine is when they limit their wine experience by giving me qualifiers like “I only drink reds” or “I only drink French Chardonnay.” Now I understand you are drinking what you enjoy!   But humor me and think back on how you discovered that Merlot you love for the first time.  Was it a little bit risky? If you never become adventurous with your wine selections you will continue to see the world of wine in one shade, instead of the beautiful kaleidoscope of colors that it can be.

If you want to learn more about wine, start thinking of your wine experience like your investment portfolio.  You need to diversify!

So this is my biggest piece of advice to anyone ready for a little wine adventure: the next time you are dinning out, order a glass of wine that you have never tasted before.  Stop ordering the same old glass of Pinot!  Do you see some weird Spanish varietal on the list that you have never heard of? Go experience it!  If you enjoy it, take a photo of the wine list so you can look up the wine after dinner.  Google is your friend!

If you feel nervous about ordering a glass of wine that you might not enjoy, ask your server what they have been grooving on lately.  They will love sharing their favorite glass of wine with you.

Stay courageous, stay thirsty, and continue in your quest for more wine knowledge!
